ABOUT THE CREATOR/S:
Hi, I’m Janneke, a Dutch typographic researcher and designer exploring how typography shapes search reading and navigation. My PhD research focuses on typographic access structures like indexes in non-linear magazines, integrating AR while drawing from historical index catalogs. With a background in Visual Arts and Reading Type & Typography, I merge design, research, and experimentation to rethink book design, index-typography, and modular systems, bridging historical and contemporary practices

WORK/ PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The Index Passport catalogs 128 (proto-)indexes from 500 to 1950, highlighting key developments in typographic history. Organized to reveal major turning points, it examines early manuscript indexes (c. 1230), the first printed indexes (c. 1450), advancements of the "typographic golden age" (c. 1470–1540), and the Age of Enlightenment's (c. 1700–1800) impact on information retrieval. Using a multiple-case study approach, it analyzes both homogeneous and heterogeneous index designs, tracing patterns and transformations in typographic access structures that have shaped navigation and information accessibility.
